What is CEDA?

The Community Education Development Association (CEDA) is a non-profit inner city community development organization that was established in 1979.  CEDA strives to meet the educational needs of our community, focusing on advocacy and programming that addresses the inadequacies of the education system in serving the members of our community. We recognize that these inadequacies exist within a larger context of social and economic inequality as well as both societal and institutionalized racism and we are committed to raising awareness of this context both within and beyond the community that we serve.

CEDA believes that education can be a ticket out of poverty. However, inner city schools cannot improve education outcomes on their own. CEDA works in partnership with parents and community groups through a community self-help approach to develop programs, access resources and address issues to enhance inner city education and the quality of life in inner city neighbourhoods.

CEDA is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Pathways to Education Canada. The Pathways to Education Program, developed in Toronto’s Regent Park community, have dramatically increased graduation rates in that area. After extensive community discussions it was determined that Pathways to Education could make a difference in graduation rates in the North end of Winnipeg where graduation rates hover at below 50 percent.

The Pathways to Education Program offers four pillars of support to students: advocacy, tutoring, mentoring and financial support and works directly with the student from grades 9-12. To be eligible for the program, the student must be entering grade nine in September and must live within the targeted area: Redwood Ave. to the North, The Red River to the East, Sutherland Ave. to the South and McGregor Street to the West. CEDA’s Student centre is located at 470 Stella Ave.
In partnership with the Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg School Division, CEDA-Pathways to Education –Winnipeg will focus on lowering high school drop-out rates, increasing access to post-secondary education and closing the “opportunity gap”. Together we have the power to change everything.
